How to Buy a Specialist Food Business

Here's how to buy the right specialist food business in South Africa.

Specialist food is an exciting sector to buy a business in. The options are seemingly endless when it comes to specialist food, especially in South Africa. There are numerous cultures and, with them, hundreds of foods and flavours.

Trying to narrow down your search as to which business will be right for you might seem like a daunting task. However, if you identify your strengths and interests and research your market, you’ll find the perfect one.

Food Trends

In order to find the right business, you will need to understand the market and research what your customers want.

In South Africa, there has been a rise in the number of people that are focused on health. In terms of food, this has taken shape in a few ways. Organic produce, artisan foods, low-carb or vegan.

The speciality tea and coffee industry has also seen an increase in popularity in South Africa and a lot of businesses have capitalised on this. The same is true for craft beverages, alcoholic and otherwise.

There are also a lot of people who are interested in celebrating the cultural diversity of the country through the foods that are on offer. Restaurants and foods that showcase foods from a wider range of cultures are becoming popular.

Choosing the right business

It will be important that you consider the kinds of trends that this sector is experiencing but make sure that this is not the only thing you look at.

Research the market and make sure that there is a demand for the food that the business is selling. This will be very dependent on the location of the business.

You must be familiar with your market before you decide on which business to buy.

Your skills and your interests will also need to overlap with this. Buying and running a business is going to be hard work and it will make it a lot easier if you’re passionate about what you’re doing.

The price of the business, of course, will be a large determining factor as to which business you will buy. Selecting the right one within your budget, however, will require market research and an assessment of your own interests.

Consider a franchise

When you are considering your options for buying a business, you might realise that a franchise is the option that suits you best. There are a lot of businesses in South Africa that have fined tuned their Speciality Food Business and are now offering franchise opportunities.

Buying a franchise will allow you to collaborate with others and be part of a team. You will also be able to take advantage of the marketing that can be done by a larger umbrella company.

The franchisor will also provide training so that, even if this is a field with which you are not familiar, you will be able to hit the ground running.

This option will, however, have less flexibility as to what you can do with the business and how you run it. Ultimately, you will need to consider whether you are more comfortable with the structure that a franchise provides or whether you want to buy an independent business.
