Opened in April 2014 as a European fine dining restaurant under the business management of the freehold owner. Even then with the possibly misleading name of “The English Garden Restaurant”, this business was an immediate success. Initially and only by word of mouth recommendation (our business cards were not ready nor was our website up and running), we were busy every night of the week with the clientele being mainly residents and the residents being of all nationalities.
Four years of most evenings fully booked throughout the year (closed November/early December for 6 weeks) put our restaurant in the top 3 of Mijas Costa. Even Tripadvisor, where many restaurants self opinionate for high rankings, had the The English Garden Restaurant at No.5.
The restaurant was opened six evenings a week throughout the year and Sunday Lunch during the winter months of December to May.
The year round staff was a Chef, a sous chef and an assistant in the kitchen with a front of house and a waiter on the floor.
In April 2018 the owner rented out the restaurant on a 15 year lease to a very pleasant couple, but with limlted experience in the restaurant trade who also ignored the reasons for the restaurant's success.
By Sept 2019 the restaurant had lost many of its regular clientele and its reputation. The tenants decided that a change of decor and a manager, supposedly with experience, would bring back the clientele.
A redecoration and design plus a new theme was completed in late January 2020 and the restaurant reopened with a new manager on the 7th February 2020.
Due to the Government legislation to fight the Coronavirus, the restaurant, as with all others in Spain, was closed on the 12th March 2020. But even by then the local opinion (the same people who spread the word so quickly in 2014) was a define thumbs down to the new theme and its new manager.
Although allowed to reopen in July the restaurant has remained closed and a new lease of 15 years is offered by the freehold owner to new tenants with proven experience in the hospitality industry.
The restaurant is ready to reopen, it needs the new owners personal touches, their restaurant theme and their expertise.
The freehold owner is looking for long term tenants with the experience to achieve the success he knows that a well run restaurant in this location will bring. To help new tenants through with what will be a slow start I am making this unique offer to the right people:
A lease of 15 years renewable for 40,000 € with no monthly rent to pay until 1st Febuary 2021.
The only additional payment is a deposit of 8,700 € and 2,500 € for the first months rent (January 2021) in advance.
The lease price of this business was 65,000 € with the normal 3 months deposit of rent and services and the first month's rent in advance.
Every assistance and advice possible will be given to the new owners.
The past tenants did not maintain the website but a Google search of “The English Garden Restaurant Calahonda“ will bring up historic information of interest to potential tenants.
A totally separate business that adjoins the restaurant is also offered for lease by the owner. This Cocktail/Music Bar was leased to the same tenants and, as the restaurant, has suffered in the same way. A Google search of “The Loft Bar Calahonda“ will again bring up historic information of interest.
A 15 year lease for these adjoining premises is also on offer at 30,000 € with no monthly rent payable until 2021.

Main boulevard, Urbanisation Sitio de Calahonda. This urbanisation is one of the largest on the Coast and is heavily populated the year round . The residencial population is mainly Spanish, British and Scandinavian whilst the tourists are mainly from Europe and the British Isles.
The restaurant is double fronted on the main walkway down to the beach which is approximately 650 metres away.
Fully licensed in accordance with all 2020 rules and regulations. It has 140 square meters (460 square.ft.) approx. It consists of storage room, toilets (including disabled), fully fitted commercial kitchen, 3 dining areas and a bar. Its double frontage has sliding glass doors. It has 3 phase electricity and is air conditioned.
An opening license that cover all up to date legislation.
The restaurant has enjoyed sufficient income in only opening 6 evenings a week year round and Sunday Lunch in the months December to May.
However a lunch time clientele could be built up with little additional staff and even a breakfast trade as only 1 other food outlet in the area is open before midday.
As a restaurant with a European/Mediterranean menu it has little competition but benefits from clientele initially drawn by the surrounding Indian, Chinese, Italian and Spanish restaurants and bars. A recent study carried out by the freehold owner indicates that the original concept that was immediately very successfull (fine dining) could be altered to include smaller portions (Tapas) on the menu but still keep the quality and variety.
The purchase of the lease is direct from the freehold owner.
The license allows opening from 8am till 2 am.
Past trading has only been 6:00 pm till 1:00 am Tuesday to Sunday with a 1:30pm to 4:30pm service on Sundays from December to May.
In April 2018 the restaurant was handed over by the freehold owner as a very successfull business with a reputation second to none .
The freehold owner is looking for a new tenant who would create the same level of success previously experienced and to this end would offer all the help, advice and assistance necessary.
The lease terms are negotiable and a rent free period ending in 2021 is being offered depending on the owners assessment of the new tenants expertise and commitment.
